Muranow Station
Muranow is an unique district, not only from Polish perspective. The only housing estate in the world located - intentionally! - on the rubble of Warsaw ghetto and built from this rubble. The only one urbanistic concept from 50`s of such a scale in the capital of Poland, whose architects, inspired mostly by pre-war modernism, also took a lot from socrealism. Muranow combines Nowa Huta (Cracow famous socrealistic district) and Berlin Karl-Marx-Allee in one. And, last but not least, is the only one former Jewish district in Europe, where so few trails of the past survived - but this is also a great challenge. Muranow can creatively use these features as its advantage, also as a tourist attraction. Why Muranow Station? The name of the site has multiple meanings. At one hand, it refers to today`s status of Muranow - architectural utopia, still unsure of its identity. One symbolic sign of this "unfinishness" is metro station named Muranow (A-16), planned since 40`s of XX century, but still not existing. The station should have been located at the corner of Andersa and Anielewicza streets. Muranow Station is also an incentive to stop for a while in every-day rush, to discover this enclave of silence in the middle of Warsaw, admired so much by Muranow inhabitants. From the historic point of view the name resembles Umschlagplatz (collecting point) at the corner of Stawki and Dzika streets, where thousands of Warsaw Jews had to assemble to board the trains which transported them to the death camp at Treblinka. Today there`s an Umschlagplatz monument there. This project is a non-profit initiative - everyone interested is welcomed to join.
