TRYBUS AND PIATEK ABOUT MURANOW
Green space, clacissist or functionalist buildings from the 50-ties, shadowy space. Intriguing past. Ideal location for coffee-shop, gallery, art studio.
Hidden between two transit city-roads, protected against aliens, burdened with the tragic past. For many years Muranow was not treated as the place for the business ambitious more than the grocery store.
There was hardly any need for such activity anyway, for the district was inhabited mostly by the elderly. The only exemption was Muranow Cinema –most dynamic point in the neighborhood, attracting cinema-goers from entire Warsaw. However, they occupied the café within the cinema, and the small plots with the fountain at Bankowy Square. Besides this, there was cultural vacuum.
However, something changed during last months. Muranow was appreciated by few persons, who decided to implement their business ideas here. Should others follow, the area will get the chance for revival. In addition, in good style, not only for the tourists with thick wallet.
Fashion designer Joanna Klimas opened her new studio joined with coffee shop at Nowolipki, corner with Zamenhofa. She says: before signing the lease of the studio I was visiting Muranow’s cul-de- sac’, with photos of Greenwich Village like surroundings in my head, artistic air, a bit alternative atmosphere. As it turned out, the intuition was right.
”I do not want his place to be perceived as exclusive one, where clients are afraid to come” says Klimas. Karol PopÅ‚awski, owner of the shop and lease Wygodny Rower (Comfortable Bike) maintains: thanks to bicycle paths, trees, relative calm, his area fits to promote city trends of bicycle travel to work, for shopping, to the university, Dutch lady bike (omafiets) with a basket would be ideal.
Karol Popławski makes it clear, that the localisation was driver by the rent, which is lower in comparison to proper downtown, and vicinity of his first outlet Wygodny Rower at Nowe Miasto. He emphasizes that Muranow has a chance to play significant role on the alternative map of Warsaw.
There should be a few courageous persons, who would like to open bars and restaurants not counting initially on high return on the capital. Others would pick up the concept and surely, this would grow just like the pavilions at the back of Nowy Swiat, where presently it is difficult to find vacant place, says Popławski. Few points at Muranow have great potential in this respect.
Beauty of Muranow, this time of its socrealistic northern part attracted Joanna Jagusiak, who runs her studio Sam Pomaluj SwojÄ… CeramikÄ™ (Paint Your Pottery Yourself) at Andersa for a year and a half.
The owner knew that this was the ghetto area, yet she did not think in these terms while selecting the place.
